Four clubs continue their FA Cup campaigns

Four local clubs will be taking part in the preliminary round of the FA Cup on Saturday.

Godalming Town will host Farnham Town after both won at home in the extra preliminary round, 2-1 against Westfield and 3-2 versus Fawley respectively.

Alresford Town, 2-1 winners at Sholing, are at home to Thatcham Town, who won 5-0 (Grant 6, Elliott 51, Cooper-Clarke (p) 66, 83, Sankoh 86) at home to Petersfield Town.

The drama of the round belonged to Badshot Lea. After taking the lead early in the second half against Verwood Town at Camberley Town’s Krooner Park ground, they were held to a 1-1 draw by a Ryan Kelly equaliser.

In the replay at Potterne Park last Tuesday, Badshot Lea took the lead in the 10th minute when Cameron Blackie headed in a free kick from captain James Pilgrim.

They doubled their advantage in the 23rd minute, Darren Blake netting after excellent work by Kamran Ahmed.

Ahmed made it 3-0 with a superb strike after 55 minutes, but Verwood roared back to 3-3 and forced extra time, which produced no further goals.

Pilgrim, Josh Francis and Gav Smith showed great composure to score for Badshot Lea in the penalty shootout, but the hero was new goalkeeper Mo Nyamunga, signed from Binfield in the summer, who saved four penalties - including one that had to be retaken - as Badshot Lea won 3-1.

Posting on Twitter after the game, Nyamunga said: “Buzzing to get through to the next round of the FA Cup.”

Right-back Craig Mountain added: “We had to dig deep tonight and show character when we weren’t at our best. We’re through, which is what counts.”

Verwood Town wrote: “Congratulations to Badshot Lea tonight for their part in a great game. Good luck in the next round.”

Badshot Lea will host Moneyfields at Krooner Park in the preliminary round.

In their opening Wessex Premier games, Petersfield Town lost 3-1 at home to Baffins Milton Rovers and 5-2 at Fareham Town. Alresford Town won 1-0 at AFC Portchester.

Alton (Knee) lost 2-1 at Andover New Street in the Wessex Division 1. Alton reserves (Paddon 3, Allaway, Robert) won 5-2 at home to Westfield.
