The 24th Husband and Wife Open Pairs Tournament was held at Alton Bowling Club on July 23.

Ten couples entered, with five coming from other clubs. The 10 couples were put into a league, with each pair playing five other pairs chosen at random.

All matches were of six ends or 45 minutes’ duration, with the top four couples contesting the semi-finals.

Intermittent rain reduced the semi-finals and final to five ends.

In the semis, Gerry and Sandy Harris, from The Bourne in Surrey, beat John and Christine Williams, from Alton, 4-3, and Robert and Margaret Hutchinson, from Petersfield, beat Rod and Shelagh Spencer, from Burpham in Surrey, 5-3.

In the final, Gerry and Sandy beat Robert and Margaret 5-2 to win the trophy for the second time.

Lunch was organised and provided by Janet and James King. John and Wanda Driver ran the bar, and club members provided additional cakes, set up the club and sold raffle tickets, for which thanks were given to Pam and Sheila. The trophies were presented by tournament organiser Brian Crow.
