Vipers heading for national finals

By Surrey and Hants News in Other Sports

Farnham’s local Division 1 floorball hockey team, the Southern Vipers, are on track for a place in the national championship after picking up three points with an 8-0 win over Bristol.

The team were lacking a few key players but still outclassed the visitors in the match played at Haslemere on April 23.

The second match, against top London side the Great White Sharks, was a 6-2 loss, but the Farnham team have enough points to keep them on track to finish in the top three of Division 1.

The top three teams of each UK regional league automatically qualify for a place at the national championship in June, when floorball takes over the National Football Centre at St George’s Park in Burton upon Trent.

The Vipers squad contained nine of the 11 players in the club’s youth squad, the Farnham Fireballs.

The Fireballs have accepted an offer from one of the world’s top floorball clubs to take part in the Storvreta Cup in Sweden early next year.

The event takes place in a new £32million floorball sports centre and is usually attended by about 700 teams.

The organisers, keen to have a British youth team at the event, offered free accommodation, food and entry.

New floorball sessions at More House School were a success, with the Shooting Stars - aged nine and under - and the 16-plus Southern Venom teams enjoying the extra space after previous overcrowding at Farnham Leisure Centre.

The next session at More House, open to anyone wanting to try floorball, is on May 6 from 3pm.
