East Hampshire District Council has announced the recipients of its first round of Elite Sports Grants, which total £5,900.

Judges gave three local competitors the maximum award of £600 - athlete Luke Van Oudtshoorn, of Headley Down, tennis player George Houghton, of Bordon, and disability cricketer Hugo Hammond, of Bentworth.

The grants were launched last year to assist sportsmen and women aged between 10 and 24 in their efforts to achieve national, international and Olympic honours.

They can be put towards travelling and coaching expenses and qualifications, or the purchase of clothing or equipment.

Nominations are open for the second round of grants. For more information, visit http://www.easthants.gov.uk/elite-sports-fund.
